To make Muddy Buddies Candy Bar snack mix you will need:

  • rice Chex cereal – you can use any variation of Chex cereal, I just have always use the rice Chex cereal because it has a very neutral, unassuming flavor that won’t compete with the chocolate and peanut butter

  • butter (salted or unsalted works)
  • powdered sugar
  • candy bars of your choice- regular size candy bars or bite size/small candy bar bites – chopped as needed into bite size pieces

Classic Muddies is made with rice Chex cereal, that is covered in a chocolate peanut butter mixture and then tossed in powdered sugar. It is the perfect chocolate-peanut butter snack mix.

Is Puppy Chow the same as Muddy Buddies?

If you are wondering if puppy chow and muddies are the same thing- they are! It’s just a different name for this sweet snack mix. I don’t want to eat anything that makes me think of puppy food (chow) so I will stick to calling it Muddy Buddies!

Some extra info for Muddy Buddies with Candy Bars

  • This recipe calls for rice Chex cereal but you will see a lot of different Chex cereals. They have rice, wheat and corn Chex cereal. They also have flavored Chex cereal like cinnamon, chocolate or vanilla. I use rice Chex, it has a basic flavor profile and pairs perfect when covered in the chocolate and peanut butter mixture. I would stay away from the flavored ones, they may affect the taste of the snack mix. But if you prefer wheat or corn chex they will work great!
  • Milk chocolate chips are used for this sweet snack mix. If you prefer semi-sweet you can swap it out. You can also use any other flavored “chips”, just know it will change the flavor.
  • Classic muddy buddies has chocolate and peanut butter mixed together to cover the Chex cereal. If you do not like the combo of chocolate and peanut butter you can leave out the peanut butter and just cover the cereal in chocolate. I have a S’mores Muddy Buddy Recipe that uses only milk chocolate, no peanut butter, to cover the Chex cereal.
  • You can add as many different candy bars as you like. You can break up/chop up regular sized candy bars or fun sized candy bars. They also sell mini candy bars like Snickers, Reese’s and Kit Kats. I prefer the candy bars to be smaller in size (bite size pieces) so it’s easier to eat the snack mix and the size of the snack mix is more uniform.

How to Make Candy Bar Muddy Buddies

To get ready to make the Muddy Buddies, I get everything ready before I start.

You will need the following equipment to make Muddy Buddies:

  • medium sized sauce pan to melt your chocolate, butter and peanut butter.
  • large bowl for the Chex cereal
  • baking sheet/cookie sheet to spread out the muddy buddies after they are covered in the powdered sugar This makes it easier to make sure the Chex cereal is covered evenly, and makes it easier to add all of the candy bars to the snack mix. You can line the baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easier clean up- but you do not need to grease the cookie sheet!

To start, add your Chex mix to a large mixing bowl.

In a medium sized saucepan, over medium heat, add your milk chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter.

Immediately take it off the heat once it’s fully melted. Pour the warm chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the chex cereal in the bowl. Gently mix the chocolate mixture and chex cereal. The cereal can get crushed easily so be gentle. A rubber spatula works great for this!

Next, add some of the powdered sugar and gently mix it, making sure the chocolate-peanut butter cereal is covered fully and evenly in the powdered sugar. Add a little at time so it’s easier to mix it all in. Work quickly so it can get covered before the chocolate starts to set.

Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 8 Servings (about 1 cup each)

Equipment

  • Large or medium size saucepan
  • large mixing bowl
  • baking sheet/cookie sheet *optional- but makes it easier to make sure the cereal is fully covered in powdered sugar and makes it easier to evenly add the candy bar mix-ins

Ingredients

  • 12 oz. Box Chex Cereal
  • 1 (11.5 oz.) pkg Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 cup Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 3/4 cup Butter *I prefer salted butter to make it a bit more salty and sweet
  • 3 cups Powdered Sugar
  • Candy Bars (your favorite), chopped as needed into bite sized pieces * mini sized work perfect, regular size and fun size can be chopped up into small pieces. **not included in nutritional calculation because this will vary depending on what candy you add

Instructions

  • Pour the Chex cereal in a large bowl. (A large bowl will make it easier tor mix the cereal with the other ingredients). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat add the butter, chocolate chips, and creamy peanut butter. Let it melt on medium heat. Once it starts to melt turn the heat down to medium-low heat and stir the chocolate and peanut butter until it is melted and smooth. Remove from heat.
  • Pour the melted chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the Chex cereal and gently mix it until it fully covered.
  • Sprinkle the powdered sugar over the chocolate and peanut butter covered Chex cereal. You can add a little at a time to make it easier but work fast so it will stick to the chocolate before it sets. Mix it gently until it is fully covered in powdered sugar.
  • Spread the Muddy Buddies on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Add the candy bars and mix them in. Serve, eat and enjoy!
