What Ingredients Are Needed to Make Old Fashioned Chocolate Sauce?

Making Old Fashioned Chocolate Sauce is so simple and I bet you have all the ingredients in your kitchen!

I have a Homemade Chocolate Sauce recipe on the blog that is made with heavy cream, powdered sugar and melting chocolate. It is thick, creamy and rich with a velvety smooth taste – but it is also costs a bit more to make. Old Fashioned Chocolate Sauce is made for a budget and is every bit as good!

This simple homemade Chocolate Sauce is made with just 5 simple ingredients!

  • White Sugar
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Salted Butter (if using unsalted butter you will need to add a bit of salt)
  • Water, milk or evaporated milk
  • Vanilla Extract

Should You Use Water, Milk or Evaporated Milk for this Chocolate Sauce?

You will see in the ingredients listed above that you will need to use either water, milk or evaporated milk for this simple chocolate sauce. So, which one is best?

I recommend using milk or evaporated milk. But water will work too!

There is no wrong choice when you decide which liquid to use for this easy homemade chocolate sauce. No matter what you choose, your chocolate sauce will taste just like grandma’s homemade chocolate sauce. This sauce will be rich, creamy and full of decadent chocolate flavor whether you use water or milk.

The only difference you may notice when using milk or evaporated milk over water, is you may get more of a deep rich chocolate flavor. But really, most people cannot tell the difference when I have used water instead of milk or evaporated milk.

If you chose to use milk, use 2% milk or whole milk for a rich taste. If you use skim milk, you may as well just use water. Skim milk is a low-fat milk option that will not give the chocolate sauce any more depth in flavor than water because there is not as much fat in it.

Evaporated milk has a little more fat content and also usually has a bit of a sweet flavor with it, that adds more flavor depth to the homemade chocolate sauce.

How To Make Chocolate Sauce

This Homemade Chocolate sauce can be made in minutes!

Add all of your ingredients to a small/medium saucepan. Heat the ingredients over medium-low heat, stirring it or whisking it as it heats.

Once the sauce is heated and all of the ingredients are incorporated, let it come to a medium-low simmer (small, tiny bubbles). Let the sauce heat and simmer for about 2 more minutes until the sauce is smooth and the sugar has dissolved. Make sure the bubbles stay tiny – adjust the heat if it starts to simmer with bubbles that are bigger!

Once the sauce is smooth take it off the heat and enjoy!

Store in an airtight container for up to a week in the fridge. Reheat it on the stovetop or in the microwave (stirring frequently as it heats). It may be a bit thicker when you reheat the sauce. If you want it thinner you can add more milk or water to the sauce as you reheat it.
