Homemade Green Enchilada Sauce that is made for smothering Mexican dishes! My Green Enchilada Sauce is perfect for smothering your burritos, enchiladas, or any Mexican dish!
First of all, lets talk about my love for Mexican Food! Of all the different cuisines Mexican Food is at the top! I love the spices, the combination of flavors, the delicious sides, and sauces. I can think of nothing better than a warm smothered burrito, with a side of smooth and creamy refried beans and toasty, fluffy Mexican Rice! And don’t forget the crispy crunch of tortilla chips dipped in fresh salsa! How can you not LOVE Mexican Food!?!
I don’t have just one dish that I love more than another! I love burritos, enchiladas, rolled tacos/flautas, nachos, salads…you name it, I will eat it! And if my Mexican dish just happened to be smothered in a sauce, even better! Do I have a preference of a red sauce or green sauce? NOPE! I don’t discriminate, I love them all!
This Green Enchilada Sauce is crazy good! It is simple in flavor, which you can totally adjust to you liking, and comes together in a short time! It has just a bit of heat but tastes fresh and compliments any Mexican dish! We love it smothered on burritos, use it for our enchiladas, mix up in rolled taco filling, or smother our chimichangas with it!
Making Green Enchilada Sauce that is made for smothering Mexican Dishes
To make Green Enchilada Sauce you only need a few ingredients. Some diced green chilis (canned), bottled Salsa Verde (Green Salsa), chicken broth, some sugar, salt and cumin. That is it! Yes, you can buy Green Enchilada Sauce but I promise, this flavor is unbelievably fresh and the seasonings are perfection! If you prefer a bit more spice and heat you can try using a medium heat or hot heat Salsa Verde and green chilis, or a combo of both!
Just mix the ingredients in a medium sized sauce pan. Bring the sauce to a boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Let the sauce simmer until it reduces down and thickens a bit, which takes about 20 minutes! You can adjust the flavors to your liking as it is simmers. ***Wait to “salt to taste” until AFTER the sauce has reduced/simmered down.
After it has reduced down (some of the liquid has cooked off of it), then you are ready to eat! Salt to taste as desired, and smother those burritos and enchiladas and enjoy!
This recipe makes about 2 cups of Enchilada Sauce depending on how long you let the sauce simmer and how much it reduces.

Hi, do u have a good recipe for retried beans? I love ur recipes!
Hi Carolyn! Thank you so much!!! Here is my recipe (I will eventually get it on the blog)…it’s simple and easy!
•1 can (28oz) pinto beans drained and rinsed
•1/2 cup water
•1/2 yellow onion diced fine
•2 cloves garlic minced or 1tsp bottled/jar minced garlic
•1/2 tsp chili powder
•1/2tsp garlic powder
•1/2tsp onion powder
•1/2 tsp cumin
•1/4 tsp ground oregano
•pinch cayenne pepper
•Salt and pepper to taste
To make: in a medium/large saucepan add all of the ingredients and heat on medium heat until it starts to barely bubble, stirring occasionally. Cover and lower the heat to low and let simmer for 5-8 minutes. Then remove from heat and mash with a potato masher – if you want the refried beans smoother you can throw them into a blender or food processor or use a hand mixer to make them smoother! If they are too thick you can add a little bit of water to thin them out to your liking! And you can adjust the seasonings and flavor to your liking as well! Let me know how you like them! Thank you for liking my recipes and for the support!❤️😘
